Smallholder Farms in Bulgaria and Their Contributions to Food and Social Security

Bulgaria has a long tradition of smallholder farming, predominantly producing for self-consumption. As result land reform and farm restructuring, many rural households received agricultural land. Some developed commercial farms but most stayed as subsistence farmers used their small pieces to produce self-consumption market the excess output top up non-farm incomes or meagre pensions. They had little capital insecure access markets. The paper employs semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 10 smallholders obtaining detailed information about individuals’ behaviour exploring issues in greater detail. In particular, study looks at drivers diverse strategies pursued by farms, importance household food security incomes, prospects future, especially possibilities productivity increases. Bulgarian on contemporary shows that production constitutes valuable safety net low therefore, it acts an extension limited social system country. Despite all challenges faced smallholders, half interviewed succeeded commercialise increase marketable surplus. Policies increased commercialisation structural change agriculture should address, besides factors, socioeconomic aspects which contribute persistence farming. Furthermore, when prioritising different policies, chosen livelihood be taken into account.
